Charcoal can get nasty scents which =nasty tastes out. We're all going to boil anyway, but boiling doesn't get rid of bad-smelling goodies. This was a worthwhile tip, thanks.

where did you find stone or rocks? i don’t live near any hills much less mountains, streams, or brooks. i could find sand, gravel from railroad beds, and whip up some charcoal (from possibly non-poisonous trees/shrubs). what do ya think? would i survive drinking swamp water with my available filter materials? please advise!
