It’s National Preparedness Week. Do you
know what to do in an emergency?
How would you protect your family and
yourself in a disaster?
Well, this is the perfect time to find out.
Last year Calgary experienced
devastating floods and thanks to
emergency planning,
extensive preparations, and a coordinated
approach,
we faced a disaster head on and were soon
on the road to recovery. These are steps
you can take to ensure you, and your
family, are ready
in severe flooding or any emergency that
might strike our city.
The first step is to know the risks. There
are a number of natural and man-made
hazards that we could experience in
Calgary.
Parts of our city are in a flood plain; a
snowstorm could cause widespread
power failures;
we could experience a chemical spill or
explosion.
Knowing the potential risk we face is
an important part
of being prepared. The second step is to
have a plan.
Know the safe exits from your home and
your neighborhood,
keep an updated contact list of how to
reach family members if you get
separated,
develop plans for children seniors and
disabled members of your family,
and most importantly don’t forget your
pets. The third step is to have a 72-hour
emergency preparedness kit on hand. It’s
a simple to build kit
and will help sustain your family for up
to three days if emergency responders
are helping others
in immediate danger. Your 72-hour kit
should contain things like bottled water,
dried or canned food for three days,
utensils,
and tools like a manual can opener and a
camp stove. Also include prescription
medication, a flashlight,
a battery-operated radio, and a first aid
kit, and matches.

At this time a year many residents think
about potential flooding
and there are things you can do to help
mitigate flood damage to your home.
Locate appliances like electrical panels
furnaces and hot water on upper floors.
If that’s not feasible, raise them off the
floor as much as possible.
Store summer those irreplaceable items
on
higher levels of your home. And down in
the basement install a backflow
prevention device
on your waste water pipe. This will help
prevent wastewater
and storm water from entering your
basement. If you have a sump pump
ensure that it has a backup power supply.
Remember:
temporary water barriers like sandbags
and flood tubes
may only be effective in slow-rising
water.
The City has a list a flood preparation
steps that you can take.
Visit calgary.ca/floodprep for
information. We can’t prevent disasters
but by knowing the risks and being
prepared,
we can protect their families and
mitigate the impacts. Everyone has a role
to play in emergency preparedness.
Know what you can do.
